Chicks...

A chick will live at this colony about 15 weeks. In that time its appearance will change dramatically; from its black and "naked" state at birth, to a white fluffy month old chick and then, by 3 months, it will have become a grey speckled juvenile.

At flying age the average chick will weigh fifty times its 60 gram birthweight. However, most extra fat will be lost with learning to fly and feed.

The chicks depart for their first flight, to Australia, at 15-16 weeks of age; 70 to 80 percent die over the next 2-3 years before their return to Cape Kidnappers.

(From an information plaque at the colony.)

Rachel in New Zealand

Rachel in New Zealand

They wouldn't let Rachel out of the international transit area of the airport in New Zealand until our flight to Australia without a visa application process that would have taken longer than our planned vacation in New Zealand. You New Zealanders should be proud that your government protected you from a cute Filipino toddler in the care of an American family. Americans don't need visas to enter New Zealand, but citizens of the Republic of the Philippines do. (I thought we were OK, but I guess I misread the New Zealand government's web site.) So... we had a vacation in Australia.
