Flight or Fight

Flight or Fight

How can a funeral of an old soldier in Canada have any links with some momentous events in war torn Europe of the 1940s? For one fortunate journalist, in the right place at the right time, the opportunity to find out presented itself on a very cold day in Ontario in 2003.

A chance meeting with the elderly widow revealed a past that at first seemed to incredible to be true. “Did you know I flew Spitfires in 1943?” the widow asked the young woman. However, as she came to know the widow and learned her story, she came to believe her amazing tale.

With the widow’s consent, the journalist began her biography, on condition that she publish the book after the elderly lady’s death.

The story is an amazing one, as the lady believed herself to be male up to 1943. As a young fighter pilot in the RAF, young Stephen Wilkie flew and fought against the Luftwaffe. Having shot down many enemy planes, he was eventually shot down and captured by the Germans in occupied France. Transferred to a POW camp in eastern Germany, young Stephen plans a daring escape. His plan is to disguise himself as a girl and slip out after a camp play, to which the German guards were invited.

However, as the escape preparations are underway, Stephen's body has plans of its own, as the young man changes slowly, but irreversibly, into a young woman.

Not the healthiest place to experience such a change.

Getting out was just the start of a fantastic and sometimes terrifying adventure. To make matters worse, the young woman falls in love with an enemy officer.

Removalgroup Reviews Complaints - UK Airport Travel Update

UK airspace will be free of a dense volcanic cloud for the rest of the week, allowing the half-term getaway to begin without threat of disruption, according to the latest forecasts.

The Met Office believes that projections showing a heavy cloud of ash blanketing the UK on Friday are no longer valid because the Grimsvotn crater in Iceland is now emitting only steam as the eruption subsides. The information emerged in a conference call involving the UK aviation industry on Wednesday afternoon and the national weather forecaster is expected to produce a new, detailed forecast later this evening.

According to an aviation industry source, the latest development has headed off a potentially embarrassing development for the Met Office and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Friday.

This could have resulted in British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights being grounded while Emirates and American Airlines services took off and landed.

The news comes as UK airlines return to normal operation following severe disruption to flights in Scotland earlier this week. The head of British Airways and Iberia joined the clamour over the handling of the volcanic ash cloud after claiming that a BA test flight "found nothing" after flying through a smoke plume deemed by regulators to be too dangerous for normal commercial flights.

— We are unable to display your booking as all flights have been flown.

I was really speechless when I saw this red alert trying to check-in online on ba.com 23 hours before the flight. Have I gone mad? Have I flown this flight already and happened to forget? If yes then, how come I'm still in the UK (it was a London-Moscow flight)?

The fact that BA's phone support wasn't available till 7am next morning encouraged a night full of thoughts and contemplation ;) It turned out in the morning that they had simply cancelled the flight and failed to inform me of that. Nice, user-centered service, that's what it is ;)

Needless to say that after this incident I don't fly BA any more.
